Chicken Dreams Flower Farm

What Happens on a Flower Farm After the Flowers Fade?

When the last bouquets of the season have been made and the garden begins to fade, you might think things get quiet here at Chicken Dreams Flower Farm. But fall is actually one of the busiest—and most hopeful—times of the year!

There may be fewer flowers to cut, but there is still plenty happening behind the scenes. Every bit of work we do now helps make next spring and summer possible.

Saying Goodbye to the Dahlias (For Now)

One Hard Frost

Our dahlias gave us so much beauty this season, from market bouquets to wedding flowers. Once frost blackens the plants, it’s time to dig up the tubers, check them over, and tuck them away for winter. It’s a muddy job, but saving those tubers means we can enjoy many of our favorites again next year.

Planting Spring Before Winter Arrives

One of my favorite things about fall is planting tulip bulbs. It feels a little like burying treasure: we put them in the ground now, then wait through the cold months for that first burst of spring color.

We’re also planning for beautiful early-season blooms, including ranunculus and anemones. Those delicate-looking flowers take plenty of preparation, but they’re worth the effort.

Little Plants With Big Plans

Larkspur, Delphinium, and Stock

Some flowers actually get their start in the cool weather. We’ve planted larkspur, stock, and delphinium, and we’re keeping an eye on temperatures as they settle into their beds. With a little protection and a lot of patience, these young plants will have a head start when the growing season returns.

Dreaming About Next Year’s Flowers

Fall also means seed packets, garden plans, and plenty of decisions about what to grow. I’m looking forward to more lisianthus, dahlias, and all the interesting textures and colors that make our bouquets feel like little pieces of the garden.

And we’re working on something new for 2027: a small Office Desk Flower Subscription, designed to bring a bit of locally grown beauty into your week. I’ll be sharing more details soon!

Thank You for Growing With Us

To everyone who visited us at the farmers market, ordered flowers, trusted us with wedding blooms, or simply cheered us on this year—thank you. Your support makes all of this possible.

The fields may be winding down, but the dreaming certainly isn’t. Follow along as we prepare for another beautiful season at Chicken Dreams Flower Farm!
